Ok, I am going to try and give you an idea of EVE is like during a battle. The following happened last night during the fall of Cloud Ring as wee made our final assault.
Politics: The Reckoning Alliance with a few support Corps had Sovereignty claims on this region of space, to have sovereignty means that you have to have had total control for so many weeks per level of sovereignty. Consisting of 6 constellations and associated planets and moons. Cloud Rind sits adjacent to Fountain which is the region of space that the Brutally Clever Empire (BRUCE) occupies. Prior to our attacking and taking this region of space we had been receiving more and more attacks into our space and they had nightly been blockading routes from Empire (controlled space) to our area. Finally after peace talks failed and treaties broken, BRUCE went to war. The war lasted only a week but many Reckoning and some Bruce were lost.
Time: 2350 EVE TIME (GMT)
Place: 9-4RP2 system in Prelle Constellation in Cloud Ring
The time was coming finally for this campaign to come to an end. A campaign can be very long or very short. You can only hope that it will be very short because your enemy either does not have the will or resources to continue.
My MKIII RAVEN EWAR battleship was ready, we had just been given the intel that the final system of our assault was going to be XZH-4H that was a closed end system, only one way to leave or enter but through the jump gate that connected ZXH-4h to 9-4RP2. The scary part to this assault was that this system has the richest minerals and the most ore belts in the whole region of Cloud Ring with a negative .74 rating (lower the rating more to offer) this meant that it had hard to find minerals and PVE factions worth billions in ISK. This system they would have heavily defended with constant gate camps to kill who ever jumped in and heavily defended Player Owned Stations (POS). You find these POS’s at moons anchored by gravimetric anchors that hold the station in place. The FC came across the vent with a change in build, all pilots were to report to the Out Post in 9-4RP2 for EW changes. Our recon had found their heavily reinforced tower. It was a Domination Control Tower, a tower if properly fitted with the right shield hardeners and weapons could defend itself against any sizeable force. Our intel found that this one had a large number of sensor dampers that could prevent or break our weapons lock. Which could allow its weapons to have a field day to our fleet? The Wing commander in the out post passed out ECCM (LADAR) a secondary electronic array that provides a significant boost to sensor strength for a short time, this hopefully would burn through their jammers and allow us to lock and keep locked assigned targets. After removing two tracking disrupters and placing my ECCM in their appropriate slots I was undocking and joining the formation.
The FC (Aimed D’Tact) was taking comms from normal chat to combat comms which meant unless you had something that was important to the mission keep off or face the wrath of leadership. The FC was giving the final instructions of how and where we would employ our fleet. This was going to be a 2 phased attack, first, kill the cyno jammers. Cyno jammers are used to prevent large capital ships like carriers and dreadnaughts from self portal jumping them into normal space by causing normal space not to be able to sustain a stable worm hole. The second phase was to put the POS into reinforcement mode which means that depending on the amount of Strontium Clathrates which supercharges the shields when it goes into this mode would mean from 1 minute to 2.5 days nothing can happen to the POS but once the Strontium Clathrates run dry then the 750,000,000 ISK station can be destroyed and all the guns, EW, and structures attached are captured and become our property.
It was now 0025 EVE hours and the fleet was sitting in 9-4RP2 on the cyno gate connecting to XZH-4H. Scouts reported that the enemy had vacated the other side of the gate. Their covert ops ship that we knew was in our system must have reported our build up. Well, at least we won’t have to fight our way in. 0100 EVE, the FC gives the 70 ships sitting on the gate the go to jump in. With my Damage Control II module activated and getting our senses once the jump through the gate was completed we started aligning for the moon that had the guys called “The Deathstar”. FC called for fleet alignment and warp in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and the FC initiated a fleet wide warp to the enemy POS. Seconds later with all the ships next to the POS shields the FC started barking out orders for all ships to stay within 1000 meters of his ship. We did this because over many trial and error times our best and brightest pilots came up with a way for many ships to be able to care for one ship. Normally in a battle one ship will be called “Primary”, this means for all ships to lock and fire, hoping that the combined fire will kill the ship quickly and efficiently so that another ship can be dispatched the same. Our MKIII ships were fitted specifically for this kind of warfare. By ourselves we are weak, but when 2 or more are together we are vary dangerous. If one ship comes under fire and calls for repair the other ships have fitted a remote repair device that repairs either the targeted ships shields or armor. If two or more ships are repairing the same ship it can become impervious to all the damage that has been designated on it.
I set my ship to stay within 500 meters of the FC, the tighter the formation the easier t reach all ships with in 7500 meters of the repair modules range. The FC called for all ships to lock and concentrate all fire on the Deathstar, while the enemy station had 3 pilots in it with one controlling all the 40 enemy guns. The POS gun controller could split up or concentrate fire on any ship he so chose. With in 10 seconds of our fleet opening fire the first request for armor repair started coming in. Rikalin in his Megathron battleship was taking damage. When I first locked his ship I saw that his damage was minimal but in the span of a couple of seconds his shields were gone which meant that over 8000 shield points had been evaporated which in a normal battle would have taken minutes to do. Rikalin an experienced player knew to ask for help as soon as he saw the damage instead of waiting to ask for repairs when it would be too late. By the time I module was at full power he was already at half of his armor. Quickly my ship and others who had locked onto him had quickly restored his armor and shields. Just as soon as his shield was repaired the enemy POS switched to another target. Again, the cycle would take place by pilots within the fleet locking and repairing the ship that was under fire. After what seemed an eternity I saw the orange damage box flash on my screen indicating that I was taking fire. I too made the call for repair and saw many ships starting to flash yellow boxed meaning that they were locking my ship. My armor had fell to 30% which if they had not repaired meant that I only had hull left, my Damage Control Module gave me 50% resistance to hull damage but with the amount of firepower be wielded at me I would vaporize very quickly if not helped. All the while this is going on the POS is now splitting its fire power and acquiring multiple targets to try and get us to leave one ships unprotected long enough for him to deal enough damage to kill a ship. Minutes go by; I have been repaired 4 times with the last time catching me down 10% armor. Our missiles and guns continue to pound the fortified Cyno Jammer and it is almost taken out of action when the call from the FC to Nonstickron of the Parrot Shop Corp is drifting to too far form the fleet and that the POS is locking him, Nonstckron kicks in his microwarpdrive to get the Typhoon battleship closer to either group so that we can repair, he calls that he is going to try and warp out since he feels he cant make it to the group before we can repair him, just as his ships aligns, a large fire ball erupts with a brilliant light as Nonstickron’s typhoon explodes. The FC in anger lets everyone know “that is what happens when you get out of repping range”. We continue finally the Cyno Jammer is down, and not more than 10 seconds later my overview shows a Cyno symbol meaning that a ship somewhere in the system is generating a cyno beacon for the capitals to come in on. The FC calls out that friendly cyno is in progress which brings relief to all in the fleet, nothing like have a group of capital ships that are not friendly share the same space with you. With in seconds I start seeing flashes like lightning and fire as the capital ships start appearing next to our battle ships. Their FC has all capital ships concentrate fire on the POS. It won’t be too long before the POS is rendered incapacitated. Our FC now calls on the battleships to start firing on the POS Guns, he designates a target and we concentrate our fire. Again, another ship this time it is Keelabich in his Prophecy battleship that is destroyed followed by Sukari Zulu who just did not have enough armor before we could help. After an hour and half of battle we finally destroy the last gun. The POS is now in reinforced mode and the players in the POS are left with trying to figurer out how they are going to escape the system with out being killed.
We lost 6 battleships to this POS; if not for the experienced leaders our loss may have been greater. The total loss we suffered was approximately 1.5 billion ISK the loss our enemy received was approximately 25 billion ISK. To give you an idea of how ISK relates to time if you were to mine 4 hours a night on average you could make 15 million ISK to replace a battleship and all the fittings that makes it effective you would have to mine for 13 days with average skills and average minerals around. This gives you a perspective of how loss of ISK affects a player. We EVE players understand RISK vs. REWARD.
Now that I am working again, i might kick up 1 or 2 of my accounts and do some ratting and mining. But with my work schedule, I would have a VERY limited playing time.

Thanks for the story! I enjoyed it.
I understand the loss of all that ISK. Sounds like this war really paid off in the long run. I really liked playing the game. Too bad I never made it out of the trial. Losing a full 2 weeks of hard playing in roughly 10 seconds in 0.3 space was not the kind of game I liked... Everything else was great.
Never playing WOW but I would think that what I understand of the game mechanics you would not considere a PVP battle until cetain skills have been acomplished.
EVE is a game with different levels of security, the lower level you venture into the more likely you are going to find out what you really don't know. Kind of like "Searching for Nemo", go beyond the coral reaf and you run into higher food chain takers.
My first 2 times at trying this game ended with me throwing my mouse adn swearing this was a stupid waste of time. Unless you are with a groupd of guys that have experience then the only out come in most cases is someone who quits becuase they are frustrated. I look back on when I first started playing. I was lucky if I could make 100,000 ISK a day and could run level 2 missions, now I can run a level 4 mission solo, I live in 0.0 and as long the odds are no more than 2 against 1 PVP does not bother me and I average 30 million ISK a night with out trying. It really makes a difference if you can start learnign with a Corp that has experienced players that are willing to teach.
