Those of you who've been to Dire Maul to help with the Dreadsteed and Doomguard quests may have wondered about the arena in the central courtyard outside the instances. This arena is called "The Maul". From WoWWiki:
| quote: |
The Maul is a large pit located outside the three instance wings of Dire Maul in the middle of the Broken Commons. Like Gurubashi Arena in Stranglethorn Vale, entering the Maul flags players for PVP and allows them to attack and kill other players in the Maul, regardless of faction. When a party is in the Maul, however, you cannot attack members of your party.
Sometimes the Maul will be empty, but sometimes there will be an opponent inside for brave gladiators to face: either The Razza, Skarr the Unbreakable or Mushgog. When there is something in the Maul, an NPC named Griniblix the Spectator will enthusiastically yell that it has arrived. He can be heard by anybody inside any part of Dire Maul.
Players can enter the Maul either by simply dropping into it or by entering a doorway on the west side of the commons that takes them into a tunnel leading past packs of sleeping Gordok hyenas and finally to the fighting area. The tunnel is the only exit from the Maul. It may be most prudent to enter through the tunnel, since dropping down causes the player to take damage from falling and their opponent may attack them before they have recovered their health. |
The Razza is a 2-headed chimaera which spawns about every 3 hours and always drops 2 level 51-60 blues.

Back when the level cap was 60 I use to love running dire maul just for the chance to fight some fellow alliance teams in this arena. Sometimes we'd win, sometimes we'd lose.
The funny part is if two partys fight each other, the winning team gets the right to fight Razza or the other spawns. Except the fight would last so long that the losing party would respawn and gank the winning party during the boss fight. As you can imagine, this cycle would continue for an hour or more at times.
It was a lot of fun in that pit, talking smack to the other alliance guilds, and probably a major influence on the idea of the current lvl 70 arenas.
[edit] The one time i was in a party that downed Razza, he dropped an Orb of Deception, which is still a fun novelty item.

I originally found the tunnel when I came back from a death run, got lost, and went there instead of DM West. So later I took Tigger down to check it out. I've never seen anyone or anything there besides the hyenas, and since we were partied, I didn't realize one could hurt or kill fellow Alliance there.
