Xbox Power Cord Replacement |
 |
Microsoft announced today that the Xbox power cords included in systems manufactured previous to October 23, 2003 may fail. When a cord fails there is a risk for fire damage to occur; there have been reports of minor injury and minor property damage. If you own a Xbox manufactured prior to the date posted above you should visit this page in order to receive a free replacement cord. You will need to provide Microsoft with your serial number and manufacture date which are both found on the bottom of the Xbox.
The complete press release can be found here .

I wonder what the fault is? I can't imagine it being a mechanical issue, as the connector shapes are fairly standardized. More likely is that the cord was made with weak materials that allow the conductors inside to short together. Perhaps an assembly line error that mixed the plastic badly and created voids, soft spots, or brittle spots.

Oh well, it's a minor issue that they have fixed on time and have done a good job on getting to a quick problem solution unlike their M$ net issues with IE and other things =\ Im just waiting for Xbox 2 to come out in late December hopefully or summertime in 06'. Halo 2.5 will be one of the first games they will develop
Halo 2 owns same with the first halo, so anything you wish that was in both of the halo's that wasn't included will surely be in the new Halo 2.5 for Xbox 2.
My xbox was bought in mid june I believe of 2002. Mine works fine and nothing has ever gone wrong "yet" which I hope nothing does. Im going to get the new cord just incase mine decides to do something dumb and cause a house fire =\

Tip: When you replace your cord, cut the end off the old one, so no one is tempted to use it again. You don't want it turning up at a garage sale because someone grabbed it at the landfill to recycle and then it later burns someone else's house down.

Here is some interesting information on the power cord recall: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/03/19/xbox_recall_nofix/
Apparently the cord was never the problem, the power supply is. The new cord "has an interrupter switch that acts like a conventional fuse, tripping power to the unit."
